Ketkanya

"I am Ketkanya Opanuraktham, born on March 12, 1969. My younger brother is married but I am not, because I love living on my own so I can be totally dedicated to my craft. I have a BA in Dancing, but my true passion lies in crocheting. I guess I inherited it from my mother, who taught me how to crochet, and my grandmother was a seamstress.

"I learned to crochet when I was younger, and soon entered a competition which I won with a hat and scarf set that I made. During the summer holidays I used to spend my time crocheting to earn extra pocket money, which I would separate into two, one part I saved and the other I used it to buy more wool. I also crocheted gifts for my friends' birthdays or for special occasions.

"Everyone was always telling me I should sell my products in a more formal way and some friends and I set up a workshop. Two years later I decided to branch-out on my own so I could develop my own designs. In 2004 I received Thailand's 'One Tambol One Product' recognition, which means my products have been selected for Thailand's international market.

"Having graduated in dancing, deciding to work in crochet was a major change in my life. However, from my experience in dancing, I can tell a person's attitude and self-confidence from the way they carry their body, and this I can apply when dealing with others.

"I have three lovely dogs at home. They are so naughty, and they always make me happy and laugh. When I get back home and see them, I smile.

"My designs are intended to highlight Thailand's femininity, for they are designed by a Thai woman. I love the fact that they are handmade, because it means I can work from home.

"Our King always says we should lead our lives avoiding excesses, and I do agree with him. I pay attention to every detail, and always think of myself, my family and my work. I lead a regular and peaceful lifestyle. Every time I show my work I feel a sense of excitement as I wait anxiously for a customer's remarks of satisfaction.

"I owe my success to my grandmother, who taught me how to sew, and to my mother, who taught me how to crochet. However, my designs have their own stories, because they come from my own experiences.

"I hope people regard my products as something more than an object. Every piece I create has its own story behind it, including my creativity and artistry. Every piece is intended to satisfy customers' varied tastes and satisfaction."
